Scarlet fever is caused by a strep infection of the throat or another area of the body. A fine red rash makes the skin feel like sandpaper. Children who have scarlet fever are generally not any sicker than children with strep throat who do not have the rash.
Signs or symptoms: Sore throat, fever, stomachache, headache, swollen lymph nodes in neck, decreased appetite. Students need to be on antibiotics 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours before they can return to school.
